Cornelis “Neil” Geldof Jr., former director of engineering and planning for the Metropolitan District Commission serving the Hartford, CT, area, and a former president of the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers Section, died March 25. He was 70.
Geldof, P.E., grew up in Yonkers, NY, and studied civil engineering at Clarkson University in Potsdam, NY. After graduating in 1969, he was hired by the Connecticut commission and rose through the ranks there until his retirement in 2002.
Geldof’s extensive public service over the years included terms on the local wetlands committee, the planning and zoning commission, and as a chairman of the board of education. Most recently, he served on a charter revision commission.
A Life Member of ASCE, Geldof was active with the Connecticut Society of Civil Engineers, where he rose to serve as president. He also belonged to the New England Environmental Association and the American Water Works Association.
Geldof and his wife June wed in 1969 and enjoyed traveling together. Many also knew him for a lifelong passion for golf. He enjoyed getting in a “quick 9” with friends anytime he could.
