ASCE has honored Hai Yang, Ph.D., C.Eng, M.ASCE, with the Francis C. Turner Award for leadership in the fields of transportation network modeling and transportation economics, and for his extraordinary record in both research and mentoring.
Yang is one of the top transportation scholars in the world, and has made significant contributions to the advancement of transportation engineering as well as engineering education. He is a highly respected researcher on economic analysis and modeling of smart mobility. He also has a solid background in both microeconomics and operations research, and Yang and his students have developed a substantial body of work on modeling taxi service. They introduced the network equilibrium concept, traffic congestion effects, and other services.
His contributions to transportation engineering education and professional service are equally impressive. He has trained students who are faculty in universities on four continents: Asia, North America, Europe, and Australia. In his six years as editor in chief of Transportation Research, B, Methodological, he oversaw one of the greatest growth periods in terms of submissions to the journal and handled all with efficiency. Under his leadership, the journal has consistently been ranked at the top of all transportation journals.
Yang combines leadership, dynamic energy, and research creativity to contribute to the improvement of society through transportation engineering. He has a rigorous scholarly approach in his research, with effective organization, perseverance, and phenomenal team-building abilities. He is clearly an established world leader in transportation research who has made an exceptional impact on the field with his innovative methodological approaches to the analysis of complex transportation problems. His body of work has had a profound influence throughout the world.
The lectureship was established by the Transportation and Development Institute (formerly the Highway and Urban Transportation Divisions) of the Society by the solicitation of gifts from the many friends and admirers of Francis C. Turner, Hon.M.ASCE, former chief engineer of the Bureau of Public Roads, and retired Federal Highway Administrator.
