Aleksandar Stevanovic, Ph.D., P.E., F.ASCE, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at the Swanson School of Engineering, at the University of Pittsburgh, has been named a fellow by the ASCE Board of Direction.
Stevanovic teaches courses in transportation and traffic engineering, transportation planning, and operations research. His teaching and research interests include a variety of subjects, such as traffic signal systems, traffic engineering and operations, intelligent transportation systems, multimodal and sustainable operations, and others. He has advised more than 40 graduate students and five postdoctoral associates, and he has served on the Ph.D. committees and graduate programs of several international universities. He is also an Eminent Engineer of Tau Beta Pi engineering honor society (Florida Epsilon chapter, since 2012).
Stevanovic has published more than 150 journal and conference papers and presented at more than 100 international, national, and state seminars and professional meetings. He is on the editorial boards of six international academic transportation journals and serves as a reviewer for more than 50 scientific journals and conference proceedings. One of his papers received the Best Scientific Paper Award at the 25th ITS World Congress in 2018 in Denmark.
He has been a principal investigator on more than 35 research projects (for a total of ~ $4.5 million in funding) for various transportation agencies, including TRB/NAS, NSF, UDOT, UTA, FLDOT, and NJDOT. He has been given awards for research excellence that include the Outstanding Engineering Achievement Merit Award, awarded by the Engineers’ Council (2019).
Stevanovic is actively involved with the Transportation Research Board of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. He is currently a member of TRB ACP80 Traffic Simulation Committee and a former member of the TRB AHB25 Committee for Traffic Signal Systems. He has participated in several professional panels and committees (e.g., NCHRP, ITE, ASCE) and he currently holds a position of Urban Mobility Expert with the European Institute of Innovation and Technology.
He is best known for his contributions to adaptive traffic control systems (ATCS), where he has been a major contributor to many government (NCHRP) reports. He has been invited to present on ATCS topics at many national and international seminars, including two continuing education webinars sponsored by ASCE’s Transportation and Development Institute. Stevanovic has also taught short courses on ATCS at Florida Atlantic University, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, and UC Berkeley’s Tech Transfer program. His research has been highlighted in a range of media articles – from local newspapers to Time magazine. He currently holds the position of Fulbright Specialist, under the area of urban network traffic control until 2022.
Stevanovic earned his B.Sc. in traffic and transportation engineering at the University of Belgrade (Serbia) in 1998, followed by an M.Sc. (2003) and doctorate (2006) degrees in civil engineering at the University of Utah.
