ASCE has honored Pearce Ferriter, S.M.ASCE, with the 2020 Daniel W. Mead Prize for Students for his paper “How Misplaced Loyalties Are Harming the Profession.”
The Daniel W. Mead Prize for Students is awarded annually for the most well-written papers on professional ethics. This year’s paper topic was Canon 6 of the ASCE Code of Ethics, which states, “Engineers shall act in such a manner as to uphold and enhance the honor, integrity, and dignity of the engineering profession and shall act with zero tolerance for bribery, fraud, and corruption.”
Recently, the media has exposed examples of “pay‐to‐play” scandals over a broad range of organizations, from college admissions to engineering and construction firms. The pertinent question was How does this affect the Civil Engineering profession?
Ferriter is a student at California State University, Northridge, College of Engineering and Computer Science, Department of Civil Engineering and Construction Management.
The Daniel W. Mead Prize for Students is awarded to the author or authors of a paper on professional ethics. Each year the specific topic of the contest is selected by the ASCE Committee on Student Services.
