Every summer, ASCE highlights “beach reads” for civil engineers to take on vacation with them.
But with the coronavirus pandemic altering how the world works, it seemed useful to put together a similar list this spring – if not to enjoy at the beach, reading material for the civil engineer who is isolating at home, staying healthy and seeking to stay informed.
Here are seven great “isolation reads,” all accessible free to registered users of the ASCE library:
ASCE Award-Winning Journal Papers
Essentially a “Best Of” collection of ASCE journal papers from the last two years, featuring in-depth research and analysis of subjects ranging from 4D-BIM to jet-erosion tests.
Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge
ASCE defines the “Civil Engineering Body of Knowledge: Preparing the Future Civil Engineer” as the necessary knowledge, skills, and attitudes required of an individual entering the practice of civil engineering at the professional level.
The third edition, released in 2019, is especially valuable now as civil engineering students and educators are finishing the school year using remote learning models.
Adapting Infrastructure and Civil Engineering Practice to a Changing Climate
“Adapting Infrastructure and Civil Engineering Practice to a Changing Climate” explores the dilemma of balancing future needs for engineered infrastructure with the risks posed by the effects of climate change on long-term engineering projects.
If the coronavirus pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that preparedness matters.
Development of Global Engineering Competency Scale
Civil engineering is an increasingly global profession, but there remains a lack of valid and reliable measures of global engineering competency.
“Development of Global Engineering Competency Scale: Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis” looks at a potential new suite of GEC instruments and measurables. An editor’s choice for the Journal of Civil Engineering Education, the article is free to access through June 30.
Electrical Transmission and Substation Structures Journal Collection
As severe thunderstorm season continues across the United States, it’s an excellent time to review transmission line systems and keep them resilient.
ASCE has opened an Electrical Transmission and Substation Structures Journal Collection for free through May 25.
