Writing Team Earns 2020 Moisseiff

ASCE has honored the writing team of Tomoaki Takeda, Tsukasa Mizutani, Tomonori Nagayama and Yozo Fujino with the 2020 Moisseiff Award for the paper “Reproduction of Cable-Stayed Bridge Seismic Responses Involving Tower-Girder Pounding and Damage Process Estimation for Large Earthquakes,” published in the February 2019 issue of Journal of Bridge Engineering.

The authors investigated tower-girder transverse pounding that was observed on the Yokohama Bay Bridge wind tongue during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. Damage to the wind tongue due to pounding can potentially lead to damage of other members. However, pounding was not taken into consideration in the design, and the understanding of how damage occurs after the wind tongue is damaged is not well understood. The authors constructed a multiscale model of the bridge, which was validated through comparison with actual measurements. Dynamic analysis of the multiscale model clarified the deformation of the wind tongue during large earthquakes and the resulting damage to the bridge.

The authors’ paper makes a significant contribution to seismic design and analysis of cable-stayed bridges at risk of seismic pounding.

The Moisseiff Award is given to the author or authors of an important paper published by the Society dealing with the broad field of structural design, including applied mechanics, as well as the theoretical analysis or construction improvement of engineering structures, such as bridges and frames, of any structural material.
