Ice, Cold Regions Expert Receives CAN-AM

ASCE has honored Brian Morse, Ph.D., P.Eng, M.CSCE, with the 2019 CAN-AM Civil Engineering Amity Award for outstanding contributions to cold regions hydraulics that advance the state of the art in river ice processes and for significant publications on the subject that foster positive relationships among river ice researchers in the U.S. and Canada.

Morse has demonstrated an exceptional candidacy through his career as a researcher, educator, and mentor, his research having involved extensive focus on solving ice and cold regions problems. He has served as a professor in the Department of Civil and Water Engineering at Laval University, in Quebec City, and as senior engineer and superintendent of hydraulics studies for the Canadian Coast Guard. He has taught Fluvial Hydraulics, River Engineering, Hydraulics Laboratory, Hydrology, Hydraulic Structures, Water Mechanics, Ice Processes, and River Modeling. Morse has directed six Ph.D. students and 21 master’s students, and codirected many more. He has received 15 research grants and over 65 research contracts. He has an extensive publication record, including many journal articles, a few book chapters, and conference proceedings and technical reports.

Morse has provided service to ASCE-CSCE. As a member of CSCE he was scientific editor for the 15th International Specialty Conference on Cold Regions Engineering, August 2012. He was also organizer of the 14th River Ice Workshop for the Committee on River Ice Processes and the Environment, Quebec, QC, and the 18th River Ice Workshop, Quebec, QC, 2015.

The Can-Am Civil Engineering Amity Award is given to a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers or of the Canadian Society of Civil Engineers for either a specific instance that has had a continuing benefit in understanding and goodwill, or a career of exemplary professional activity that has contributed to the amity of the United States and Canada.
